I knew all these guys and they were one great band! Another Spokane band from that magical time! These guys were a must see group... Epic!! So original!! Being in Spokane in those days, all the bands were so good and so unique.Jerry DesVoignes, June 2011

Musik auf dem vorliegenden Album entstand schon 1970, daher sollte man
sich nicht darüber wundern, daß hier kein rasender Powermetal,
sondern entspannter und doch oft sehr entfesselter Heavyrock mit feurigem
Gitarren – und Orgelspiel zu finden ist, wie der komplett explodierende
Schlußpart von „River“, dem eröffnenden Track uns unter Beweis
stellt. This album’s music was made in 1970 – it’s
therefore not surprising that you don’t find raging power metal here, but
rather relaxed yet still often unbound heavy rock with fiery guitars –
and organ music – as evidenced by the totally exploding end part of “River”,
the opening track. Der Sound der Scheibe wird sicherlich heutigen
Standards nicht mehr gerecht, ist aber lebendig und ehrlich, man hat das
Gefühl, als stünde die Band direkt neben einem. The
disc’s sound does not conform to today’s standards, but it is lively and
honest, and you get the feeling that the band is standing right next to
you. Sleepy John standen immer noch an der Schwelle von den 60er
Psychedelicbands zum 70er Hardrock. Sleepy John was
still operating on the threshold of the psychedelic bands of the 60’s to
the hard rock of the 70’s. Ausladende, die Sinne raubende Jams und
Soloparts gehören ebenso zum Repertoire wie geradlinige, aggressiv
treibende Momente mit eindringlichen Melodien. Extensive,
mind-bending jams and solos that rob you of your senses are as much part
of the repertoire as are straight-line-like, agressively driven moments
of penetrating melodies.
Gerade der oft ekstatisch wirbelnde Drummer
ist eine absolute Ohrenweide und nur ein kleiner Teil des packenden Gesamtbildes.
Especially
the often ecstatically whirling drummer is absolute ear candy, yet only
a small part of the whole experience. Die Stücke sind verspielt,
fließen aber sehr natürlich voran und bleiben nachvollziehbar.
The
pieces are playful, but flow forward naturally and stay reconstructable.
Ein paar Freakouts hier und dort lassen den Fluß der Stücke
nicht stocken. A few freaky parts here and there
do not interrupt the flow. Auch wenn die Gitarre nicht immer übelst
verzerrt klingt, die sehr hingebungsvolle Art, wie sie bearbeitet wird,
erweckt das Gefühl von immenser Wucht. Even
when the guitar does not sound badly distorted, the ardent way in which
it is worked evokes a sense of immense power. Ab und an wird die
Fuzzbox eingeschaltet und ein brodelnder Zerrklang schleicht sich ein und
säbelt Dir die Bauchdecke auf. Ever so often
the fuzz box is turned on and a sizzling distorted sound sneaks in and
cuts right into your belly. Nach zwei harten Rockern braucht übrigens
jede Band einmal eine Pause, da kommt eine mit üppigen Orgelarrangements
versehene, in Melancholie schwelgende Ballade wie „Nothing“ gerade recht.
After
two hard rock pieces, every band needs a break, so a ballad, heavy on melancholy
and furnished with rich organ arrangements is just the right thing. Auch
hier gibt es einige Augenblicke, in denen sich die Band der Dramatik des
Stückes halber in lautere Gefilde begibt, die dann aber wieder den
sanftmütig dahinschwebenden Passagen Platz machen. Even
here are moments where the band steps up the drama by increasing the volume,
but these moments then give way again to softly floating passages. Oder
man beachte die vollkommen irre instrumentale Mittelpassage von „Dragons“,
welche mit manischen Leads vollkommen hypnotisierend wirkt. Or,
take note of the frenzied leads in the absolutely crazy instrumental middle
passage of “Dragons” which produce an almost hypnotizing effect.
Der Hardrock ist hier nicht alleiniges Stilmittel, auch softere, versponnen
schwingende Songs mit leichtfüssigerem Ausdruck werden kurzerhand
eingeflochten, beschwören eine friedvolle Sommerstimmung herauf mit
ihrem tänzelnden Beat und der betörende Melodien singenden Leadgitarre.
Hard
rock is not the only stye aid here; threads of softer, swinging songs with
a somewhat fluid expression are also weaved in. Das war damals,
1969/70 eben noch so Usus, nicht eindimensional zu denken und zu komponieren
und doch das Material durch einen markanten Punkt wie aus einem Guss klingen
zu lassen. Das ist Sleepy John geglückt.
That
‘s the way it was back in 1969/70 – to not think and compose one-dimensional,
but to create a salient point in the material to unify it. Vergleicht
man diese Band mit der heutigen Mainstreamrockmusik, sollte man immer mit
vor Ekel verzerrtem Gesicht der modernen, uninspirierten Plastikmucke den
blanken Arsch zuwenden, um es mal salopp zu sagen. When
you compare this band to current mainstream rock music, you should – your
face distorted with disgust – turn your naked ass to today’s modern, uninspired
plastic shit, to say it bluntly.

Entweder wird heute psychotisch gebrüllt,
gelangweilt herumgenölt oder gejammert. Sleepy John hatten Leidenschaft
und ungezähmte Lust in ihren Stücken, wechselten gerne die Passagen
von den Hauptthemen hinein in Jams, aus denen komplett abgeflogene Soloeinlagen
oder den Hörer in Trance und Ekstase versetzende Melodien und Läufe
hervorgingen. Today, they either use
demented screaming, bored droning on or whining. Wie beim eigentlich
schwebenden „Seasons“, in dessen Mittelteil nach osteuropäuischer
Folklore und Psychedelic Heavyrock klingende Passagen eingegliedert werden,
zwischen denen die Band locker und ohne Stockungen wechselt. In
contrast, take the almost floating “Seasons” where the middle part integrates
passages which sound like Eastern European folk music and psychedelic heavy
rock, and the band ably changes back and forth without missing a beat.
Der
Song allein hat mehr verschiedenartige Passagen als manche Band in ihrer
gesamten Diskographie. That song alone has more diverse
passages than many bands have in their entire discography: It swells, becomes
highly intensive and brings you toward ecstasy, flows into more floating
moments, falls into playful parts with twisted bridges, then mysterious
and dark, then rocks and culminates in a scream and fiddling guitar after
the folk music-like middle. Er schwillt an, wird sehr intensiv und
zwingt Dich zum Veitstanz, er fließt in schwebendere Momente über,
gerät in verspielte, Abschnitte hinein mit verdrehten Brücken,
wird dann geheimnisvoll und dunkel, rockt bodenständig und endet mit
einem Schrei und Gitarrengefiedel nach der Wiederkehr der folkig anmutenden
Läufe aus dem Mittelteil. Wow...ich muß mich erst mal setzen.
Wow,
I gotta sit down. Ein irgendwo zwischen Country und Klamauk angesiedelter
Song schließt sich an. „Losing my plow“. A song placed somewhere
between Country and Slapstick, “Losing my plow”, follows. Beinharte
Rocker mit Scheuklappen werden jetzt laut aufschreien, als komödiantische
Einlage ist das hier allerdings sehr erfrischend.
Hard-core
rockers with blinders on are probably screaming now, but as a comedic interlude
I find it rather refreshing. Spielerisch, das merkt man gleich,
sind Sleepy John bei den hochklassigen Bands zu suchen.
In
their playful way, Sleepy John fall in with high-class bands. Immer
wieder bringen sie Einfälle, die das Material sehr abwechslungsreich
machen und natürlich erfordern, daß man sich öfter damit
beschäftigt. They continually add ideas that
make for very diverse material -- this naturally requires a certain level
of immersion on the part of the listener. Für reine Hardrockfanatiker
wird die Scheibe zum Spießrutenlauf, das kann ich schon jetzt behaupten.
I think it’s fair to say that for hard rock fans listening to this disc
is like running a gauntlet. Man bringt bluesige Einlagen, die so
verschmitzt wirken, daß es schon parodistischen Charakter hat und
das nicht einmal, aber man bringt dies so ehrlich und authentisch, daß
man es der Band einfach abnimmt. There are bluesy
interludes that are so mischievous that they take on a parodic character
– yet, the band does this with such honesty and authenticity which makes
it very believable.
Wenn man sich also an eine sehr vielschichtige
Band mit ebensolcher CD herantraut, sollte man sich Sleepy John mit dem
selbstbetitelten Erstling auf den Einkaufszettel kritzeln.
People who dare go near such a multi-layered band with a like CD should
add Sleepy John and their so-named debut-CD to their shopping list.
Genügend Persönlichkeit besitzt hier selbst der standardisierteste
Blues, daß man von mangelndem Wiedererkennungswert wohl kaum sprechen
kann. There is enough personality hier even in the
most standardized blues that there’s no shortage of recognizability. Es
macht einen Heidenspaß, den vier jungen Herren bei der Darbietung
zu lauschen. It’s truly great fun to listen to the
four young men’s performance. Ähnlich geartet, vielleicht etwas
wilder, war das erste Led Zeppelin Album, welches gut anderthalb Jahre
zuvor erschien. There are similarities to the first
Led Zeppelin album which came out a good year and a half before, although
the latter was may be a little wilder. Sleepy John hatten leider
nie das Glück einer regulären Veröffentlichung, erst 2004
erbarmte sich das US Label Gear Fab, die beiden 70er Aufnahmesessions als
CD rauszuhauen. Unfortunately, Sleepy John never
had the good furtune of a regular publishing then, only in 2004 – mercifully
– the US Label Gear Fab burnt the two recording sessions from the 70’s
into a CD. Das Ergebnis spricht für sich. The
result speaks for itself.
Die CD ist schön aufgemacht mit Bandgeschichte und Illustrationen. Mit knapp 73 Minuten ist sie auch nicht zu kurz. Liner and booklet are nicely done, with band history and illustrations. And with 73 minutes it’s not too short.
